We were asked by our Environmental Education Teacher, Sir Ruel, to create a reflection paper for the film, An Inconvenient Truth. Here is mine, and why I'm posting it online, read on for an answer.
In the dictionary, technology is defined as the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment, drawing upon such subjects as industrial arts, engineering, applied science, and pure science.¹ But what exactly is technologys purpose?
If we dwell on it, take a simple remote control as example, it was created so that people would not have to stand from their seats to turn the television on or change its channels. From the now primitive typewriter, take Microsoft Word, wherein, we do not need to change sheets of paper every time we commit a mistake. We merely press the backspace key and all our troubles go away. This, exactly, is technologys purposeto provide conveniencebecause who among us really wants any inconveniences in life?
Well, we should know better.
How clever it was to entitle the film with the one word technology was striving to omit. People who have watched An Inconvenient Truth know that inconvenience is currently making itself materialize through global warmingdue to our own negligence. It is utterly shocking how the sheer lack of ethics and concern can lead to the steady rise of this threat. And as an equally mere Year III student, it appears to be impossible to counter Mother Nature, being but a speck on this planet.
But then again, from the film itself, I believe that that is the kind of thinking that brought the earths climate to such a flux. We need to stop not doing anything and start acting upon the situation in our own little ways.
I am going to post this online because the world needs to know, the whole world needs to start caring less about little inconveniences, and instead care for the bigger picture and a bigger inconvenience that could definitely lead to world-wide calamity. True, I am a just a girlone girlbut if each of us were to take the same sacrifices I vow to make, then what a huge impact that could create.
From this day on, I vow to enjoy the wind and use less air conditioning. I will segregate and recycle meticulously, and encourage others to do the same. I will turn off lights not in use, plug out chargers when not charging cell phones, and urge my parents to use unleaded gasoline. I will continue to post entries online such as this one, and I will study well so I may put into good use my skill when I am older for the benefit of natures condition. And most importantly, I will keep my vowsbecause these small, seemingly insignificant promises can make a difference.

Shot rings out in the Memphis sky
Free at last, they took your life
But they couldn't take your pride...
